Winona Lake firefighters were dispatched to the Newburgh Town Center on Route 300, Friday morning, for a gas leak that led to the evacuation of Stop & Shop and other stores in the plaza.

The Orange County 911 Center also dispatched Orange Lake and Cronomer Valley Fire Departments to the scene.

Town of Newburgh Police blocked the entrance to the plaza on Route 300, and ordered the evacuation of the businesses.

The gas leak was reported to have been caused when a contractor, working near the AT&T store in the plaza, struck the line.

Central Hudson was called in to turn off the gas.
