Gas station still awaits remediation

The 842 Broadway gas station still awaits an official construction start and completion date but progress on cleanup has been underway. This project is a combined endeavor between the City of Newburgh, developers Eli and Shaul Vaknin and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation [DEC].

This project would involve in-ground by the DEC and above ground remediation conducted by Vaknin and their team according to City of Newburgh Planning and Development Director Alexandra Church. Once those requirements are completed, an environmental easement would be issued and thus construction would be able to start on the project.

According to Church, the developer has conducted general cleanup at the site and has gone ahead to request permission from the DEC to conduct a demolition of the site. Cleanup should be anticipated to be complete by winter into early spring time.

“They’re working on getting their demolition permits through the city, which also requires DEC approval,” said Church. “They will continue to be working on it [842] all winter.”

The former burnt out gas station located at 842 Broadway in the West End is looking to be remediated in the coming months with the proposed redevelopment into a new two story commercial space. “I think at this point, we’re really excited. I mean, again, even just to get it cleaned up is a huge step in the right direction,” said Church.

Also adjacent to the site is the Quassaick Creek which has been discussed in various public forums and outreach initiatives over the past several months in an effort to garner public support and interest in a proposed greenway along the creek. These efforts are being led by Scenic Hudson and they will be hosting another public forum on Saturday, December 10 at the Ritz Theater.
