The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks got three wins in the throwing events on their way to a third-place finish at the Section 9 Class A championships on Thursday at Goshen High School.
Monroe-Woodbury won the meet with 151 points.
Sam Okeyo won the discus throw, reaching 126-8, Jun Rivas won the high jump with a leap of 5-10 and Emmanuel Williams won the shot put reaching 44-11.5, each winning individual Section 9 championships for the Goldbacks.
Despite winning the preliminaries, John Fermpong finished third in the 200-meter dash in 22.90. Matthew Worrell was second in the 400-meter dash in 50.10, and Fermpong finished third in 50.23.
The Goldbacks’ 400-meter relay team of Charles Corbin, Elijah Price, Eric Duncan and Fermpong was third in 44.77. The 1,600-meter relay team was disqualified for not having the baton.
Corbin was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.76 and David Pinnock was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.62.
Anthony Burnett was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.62 and Pinnock took sixth with a time of 1:00.08.
Deven Batelic was fourth in the 800-meter dash in 2:04.71.
The Goldbacks’ 3,200-meter relay team of Xavier Williams, Batelic, Joseph Gaito and Burnett was fifth in 8:49.07.
The girls’ 400-meter relay team of Alyssa Worrell, Sydni Bangari, Isabella Delgado and Sania Kuylen brought home a section title in a time of 50.36 leading the Goldbacks to a sixth-place finish in the girls’ meet with 38 points.
Monroe-Woodbury won the meet with 220 points.
Kuylen finished second in the 200-meter dash in 25.93 seconds after finishing first in the preliminaries. She also was second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.73.
The 3,200-meter relay team of Arelis Guzman, Inez O’Shea, Emily Giron and Mary Jane Politi was fourth in 11:24.99.
Worrell was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 13.42 and Donasia Cheatham was sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase In 8:38.18.
Giron was sixth in the 3,000-meter run in 12:21.33 and Angelisse Diaz was sixth in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet.
Faith Scott finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 30-2.5.
