Gully’s goes up in flames

Posted

The former Gully’s restaurant, long neglected on the Newburgh waterfront, erupted in flames early Tuesday morning.

The facility on an old barge docked at the Newburgh waterfront at Water and Washington Streets was called in around 3:30 a.m. Units from Coldenham and the NY Air National Guard were called to the scene, as well as Newburgh Fire Department’s Marine One boat which fought the blaze from the water.

No injuries were reported. The origin of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire is the latest setback for the floating bar and restaurant that was once the center of nightlife before many of the city’s current waterfront establishments were opened. It was established by Ralph Risio with the help of Gail Guimares more than 30 years ago and became a popular Hudson Valley Destination spot. During nice weather, people would sail up with their boats, dock them next to Gully’s, and enjoy some lunch. They’d then be able to continue sailing on the Hudson River.

It was a seasonal business and after Labor Day each year, the barge would be moved from its place at the end of the Gull Harbor Marina dock and tied to a berth closer to the shoreline. After the restaurant changed hands around 2015, it never re-opened. It has remained at that berth since then, slowly sinking into the Hudson.
