Walden’s ‘Junk Babes’ host a costume giveaway

What to do when the rental space you’ve recently occupied came loaded with assorted dollar store items including hundreds of Halloween costumes?

If you’re Krissy Karros and Denise Gualtieri, you get an early start on your favorite holiday and host a Halloween costume giveaway for the kids in your community.

That’s what they did Sunday, outside of 150 East Main Street in Walden, future home of Junk Babe’s Vintage Treasures. The pair, partners in the business endeavor, were clad in witch costumes, greeting visitors who stopped by to pour through the racks of costumes. In addition to the free children’s costumes, brand-new adult costumes were selling for $5 apiece.

Karros estimated that 3-400 costumes were in the space, along with a few more donated for Sunday’s event. Aside from clearing some space for their own inventory of vintage antiques and collectibles, they saw an opportunity to speak some goodwill and share some Halloween spirit.

“We both love Halloween,” Gualtieri said, “we thought it could be fun.”

Sunday’s event is in advance of what the partners hope will be the opening of their brick and mortar store after running an online business.

“We’re both collectors and try to find things that we love,” explained Gualieri who studied dental hygiene. They occupied the space on East Main Street, during the summer, filling it with antiques and other treasures, while awaiting clearance from the village to open for business. The onetime home of Shearer’s Walden Nursery and more recently a dry cleaner, is actually located in a residential zone, requiring approval from the zoning board of appeals to open another retail space . They are hoping to have that hurdle cleared in time to open for business on Nov. 1.
In the meantime, they will enjoy Halloween.
“It’s all about fun and kids,” Gualtieri said. “And it gives adults a chance to be kids again.”
