In response to several reported residential burglaries in nearby communities, the Highland Falls Police Department issued a bit of a warning to the community this week.
“What we know is that these burglaries appear to be an organized international criminal effort,” HFPD Chief Jason Torpey said. “The thieves that have been identified appear to be from South American countries. They look for targets and then study and learn the patterns of its residents. Entry is typically being made through rear entrance doors or windows. Often these thieves will use rental vehicles with out of state plates to canvass neighborhoods looking for targets.”
Cash, jewelry and items of high resale value appear to be the most common items stolen, Torpey said.
“We are taking proactive measures to protect our resident’s properties. We will be utilizing all of the resources that are available to us and deploying extra patrols throughout the village, but we are asking for the public’s help,” he added.
He offered some ways to target harden your property:
Consider purchasing an alarm system or camera system. In recent years home surveillance systems have become very affordable and very user friendly. Share any video with the HFPD that shows anything odd or out of place.
Secure valuables and keep doors and windows locked.
Do not advertise on social media when you are going away. When you will be gone for a period of time, consider signing up with the HFPD’s Home Check Program. Officers will visit your property throughout the day and notify you immediately of any discrepancies. It’s free and simple to sign up, the chief said.
“We ask that the public to remain vigilant,” Torpey said. “If you see something say something. Contact the police department immediately at 845-446-4911 for the fastest response.”
