Highland Volleyball’s ‘Dig Pink’ event raises money to support local breast cancer organization

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and to help spread the word and raise awareness about the disease, the Highland High School Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV) Volleyball teams hosted their annual “Dig Pink” fundraising event during their home matches on October 4.

The teams dressed in pink tie-dyed shirts for their games, creating a “pink out” on the court. The Huskies even adorned the gymnasium with pink balloons, streamers, and posters. Thanks to their popular bake sale, which was held during both games, and through other various donations, the teams raised approximately $800 in support of “Dig Pink.”

The proceeds were sent to Breast Cancer Options, an organization that sponsors Camp Lightheart. The camp, which is held at the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, serves children who have a parent with breast cancer, or have lost one to the disease. The Camp Lightheart program offers recreation, relaxation, and fun, as well as support for children whose families are experiencing the stress of illness. In addition to enjoying activities organized by the highly skilled staff, the children are also given opportunities to talk about their individual situations.

Highland Varsity Volleyball Coach Colleen Giametta, who is also a teacher at Highland Elementary School, is proud of her team. “This event is truly inspiring year after year,” she said. “The girls take such pride in hosting Dig Pink and raising money for a worthy cause of their choosing. The event showed that the members of both the Varsity and JV teams are true leaders on and off the court.”
