The Marlboro softball team is two victories from a state championship.

The Dukes beat Section 11 champion Babylon, 10-1, on Saturday at Middletown High School to win the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class B regional championship, punching their ticket to the state semifinals at the Moriches Athletic Complex.

The Dukes are scheduled to face Section 4 champion Chenango Valley on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. A win will put them in the 5 p.m. championship game.

The Dukes beat Babylon, behind a complete-game, seven-strikeout performance by Ava DelSalto. She also had two hits.

Ella Leduc had two hits and two RBIs and Kasey Conn had two hits. Isabella Gulcaglyan had two hits and two RBIs, while Emma Jackson tripled and drove in four runs. Kalista Birkenstock doubled and drove in a run.

Even though it took two days, the Dukes clinched their regional berth on Thursday afternoon with a 13-2 win over Section 1 champion Rye Neck at Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak, Westchester County.

The game started Wednesday, but the teams only got through the top of the first inning before a long weather delay resulted in the game’s suspension until Thursday. The teams returned to Lakeland High School on Thursday afternoon and only got through the third before the game was delayed an additional 100 minutes due to a rain delay.

It was scoreless when the game was stopped but the Dukes got the bats going immediately after returning to the field as Conn got things started with a triple and then scored on a Rye Neck throwing error. DelSalto then singled and then came around to score when Shelby Preisser’s throw pulled first baseman Evelyn Picone off the base. Jackson singled and scored on a wild pitch and Birkenstock had an RBI single to give the Dukes a 4-0 lead.

Even though the Dukes would add six runs in the sixth inning and another three in the seventh, the Panthers did threaten their lead. Katie Blanch homered to cut their lead to 4-1 and got another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Picone. However, the Panthers loaded the bases in the inning, DelSalto struck out Blanch to escape trouble in the fifth.

The offense took over from there. Jackson tripled in the sixth and then scored on a Gulcaglyan bunt, who later scored on a wild pitch. Leduc drove in a run with a bunt and Conn drove in a run with a base hit. Emmie-Mae Cabrera capped the scoring with a two-run double.

Leduc had an RBI single in the seventh and a Carly Correa knocked in two runs with a single.

DelSalto finished with 10 strikeouts.
