Lisa Vance-Ayers was sworn in as the new Newburgh Town Clerk on Monday, January 10 during the town’s reorganizational meeting. “It [the inauguration] felt amazing,” Vance-Ayers said, talking about the ceremony.

Vance-Ayers, who was the Deputy Clerk for the town, stepped into the role following Joseph Pedi, who was sworn in as the new Receiver of Taxes for the Town of Newburgh.

Previous to Pedi was the late Andrew Zarutskie, who served for 18 years according to Vance-Ayers. Before Zarutskie, the previous clerk was Wayne Booth.

“I’m the first female town clerk in over 20 years in the Town of Newburgh,” Vance-Ayers said.

In her first two weeks, Vance-Ayers continues to learn more about the position and is grateful for the team that she has in her office. Other members of the overall town office are also supportive of Vance-Ayers in the new role.

The staff of the clerical office include Vance-Ayers who is the Town Clerk and Freedom of Information Officer & Registrar, Dawnmarie Busweiler who is the Deputy Town Clerk & Registrar and Tiffany Ray who is the Second Deputy & Freedom of Information Officer.

“The town clerk is the record keeper of the town,” Vance-Ayers said. “If anybody wants information they call our office.”

Within the last few weeks, Orange County and the town clerk’s office have been keeping the public informed about the various distribution sites for COVID at-home tests.

More tests are coming and a date is to be announced, according to Vance-Ayers. The Delta and Omicron variants have raised health concerns and case numbers are steadily rising.

For now, Vance-Ayers said her office is currently in the process of digitizing all the town documents. By the time she concludes as Town Clerk, Vance-Ayers hopes to have this project completed.

“Our main goal is always to serve the public, always, first and foremost,” Vance-Ayers said. “If we don’t know the answer, we try to find out for people. We’re the heart of the town. We do our best to try to get an answer.”

In the coming days, Vance-Ayers encourages residents to sign-up for the email alerts on the town website to stay informed on what is happening.
