Lloyd lauds rental law process

In the past month the Lloyd Planning Board has been reviewing a number of applications for short term rentals, highlighting a number of issues that individual residents must address before they are granted permission. The board has identified the impacts of noise, the number of people allowed to stay on a site at a given time, the need for the proper number of parking spaces, ensuring driveway/right of way ownership and access, having proper septic size and the prohibition of commercial activities at short term rental properties.

At last week’s planning board meeting, Chairman Scott McCarthy pointed out that each application before them has been different. He said during the review process his board can inform an applicant of issues their neighbors are complaining about.
McCarthy said the planning board is a point of recourse for the public.

“If you’re not doing what you’re supposed to be doing with these conditions that we’ve imposed, and they’re valid complaints, we can use that against the applicant’s next application, then we can do that,” he said.

McCarthy said during the board’s recent reviews of applications, “three people commended us on the new law that is there and the way we were handling this, with some telling us what a great job we’re doing.”

McCarthy asked the public to understand, “there are growing pains with this, but I do feel we’re really able to rectify some of the issues that have been brought forward from the public.”

Land Use attorney Paul Van Cott said that the STR application review process may also allow neighbors a way to resolve some outstanding issues before it even comes before the Planning Board.
