Madison Williams heads to state track championships

Madison Williams continued to dominate the long and triple jump events.

She won them both at the Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association championships, the Section 9 championships and she won them both at Friday’s New York State Public High school Athletic Association track and field qualifier to earn her trip the state meet on Friday and Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

She led a strong Pine Bush contingent in the long jump, beating teammate Ella Galloway by nearly four inches. Nia Merritt was third. Williams won the event with a jump of 16-11.75.

She overcame an equally crowded Pine Bush field in the triple jump, winning that event with a 37-1. Merritt was third and Mya Riquelme was fifth.

Zoe Rodi just missed the state meet with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash and David Ramirez just missed as Washingtonville’s Joe Napolitano overcame him late in the race.

Valley Central’s Azaziah Marshall qualified for states in the boys’ 100-meter dash with a winning time of 11.03.
Bianca Staples led the Valley Central girls with qualification in two events. She won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.17 to go to states in that event, but at the Section 9 championships, she met the state super standard in the high jump when she and Minisink Valley’s Ella Michelitch each reached 5-7 to beat the state’s super standard. All they had to do was participate in the event on Thursday to qualify for states.

Ava Carsley qualified for the state meet in the 800-meter run.

Chapel Field’s Shaylen Goslar will attend the state meet after finishing first among Division 2 runners in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:51.16. She finished second in the overall girls’ 1,500-meter championship race behind Goshen’s Kayla Schram.
This year will be the first time anyone attends the state championships, which have not been held since 2019. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and although the 2021 season was held, the ongoing pandemic caused the state meet to be canceled.
