Marlboro honors Students of the Month

At the last meeting the Marlboro School Board, Staff and Administration honored their Students of the Month for October.

Middle School student Daylon McKenzie received the honor for October. His Physical Education teacher Amanda Griffen highlighted his positive attributes, saying that he is an extremely dedicated student and makes sure that no one feels left out during class.

“Daylon is a positive student in our class and he is always a participant and a great role model to all his classmates. Daylon is a hard worker in physical education and in all of his classes. He gives all of his energy to the task at hand and displays all of the qualities that we look for in our students,” Griffen said.

Jocelyn Angulo is the Elementary School Student of the Month for October. Art teacher Christine Williams said Jocelyn always has her nose in a sketch book.

“She literally walks around drawing in the hall and comes into my room that way and out of my room that way; it’s so inspiring. She is so creative and has wonderful ideas and in a lot of cases she is happy to share them,” Williams said. “When I was talking about her to other teachers, they all had wonderful things to say about her, what a wonderful student she is and is so kind and sweet. I think all around Jocelyn is a great student.”

Jocelyn took a few moments to show the school board a sampling of her favorite artistic creations.

Megan Vacca was named the Marlboro High School Student of the Month for October by the History Department. High School Principal Ryan Lawler said Megan, “is an incredibly accomplished student, she works very hard and she represents the best of the best as a student in our Marlboro programs.”

Social Studies teacher Brian Barbulean said Megan is, “always ready for a challenge and had the tenacity to face those challenges head on. She has shown her strong character through her work ethic over these past four years. Megan was a beacon of light during our online learning and was always present, engaged and thoughtful with her responses. She always speaks her mind and engages with a confident course and goes above and beyond what is expected of her.”

Barbulean read comments from two of Megan’s teachers.

“She is a cool, down to earth and a likable person; she’s a natural leader and from the first week of school I knew she was someone special” and “She is the epitome of an assiduous scholar and an empathetic, affable human. She is the sort of student that makes teaching enjoyable and rewarding. If the world were filled with Megan’s, our future would be bright indeed.”

Superintendent Michael Brooks summed up these three honorees.

“Whether we’re talking about Daylon, Jocelyn or Megan; when you hear things like enthusiastic, they make sure that others are included, they are dedicated, have plans for after high school, are compassionate, have amazing voices, they always have their nose in a sketch book; these are the qualities of fantastic people and this is what it means to be a Duke and if we watch the news at night we see less and less of that, but thankfully every month we celebrate the fantastic people that we saw tonight displaying these characteristics. This is the vast majority of us, not just here in Marlboro but also in this country and in this world. There are good people around and we need to treat each other well,” he said. “I’m hearing things like we share our ideas, we’re creative, we’re kind; this is fantastic and be that, be these people because this is what the world needs right now. So thank you, the three of you for being you; moms, dads, aunts, uncles, cousins, whoever is here. Thank you very much for sending us these people every day. We really love it.”
