Marlboro’s Petrie, Vargas are All Stars

It was a difficult season for the Marlboro girls’ soccer team, but the Section 9 coaches honored the Dukes’ senior captain Stephanie Petrie to the Section 9 Class B all-star team.

The boys’ coaches also honored Marlboro’s junior goalkeeper Alex McAteer.

Senior year wasn’t easy as the Dukes went winless this year as the program rebuilds. She was a key piece for the Dukes during the last two seasons coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

McAteer – as a sophomore – was a key part of the Marlboro Iron Dukes team that went to the New York State Public High School Class B regional semifinals in 2021.

However, his 2022 junior season was quite different as the Iron Dukes struggled to a 4-10-0 record and failed to make the sectional tournament. However, McAteer kept the Iron Dukes close, as they only gave up five goals once and four goals once. No one else scored more than three goals on the Iron Dukes.

Two of their four wins were shutout victories and the Dukes lost two straight games, 1-0, pointing to strong play in the back, even if the offense was lacking.

No all-stars were named from the Highland Huskies.
Wallkill’s Erick Vargas was named to the all-section team, and his teammates Carson Frisbie, Jr. and Renzo Scanu were named Class A all-stars. The Panthers ran the table during the regular season, but struggled in the postseason, losing the Mid-Hudson Athletic League semifinal game to Our Lady of Lourdes and were eliminated in the Section 9 Class A semifinals by the Cornwall Dragons.

The Wallkill girls’ team’s goalkeeper Madelyn Jachimiak was named to the All-Section team and was a Class A all-star.
