Maybrook is mourning the passing of its First Lady, Elizabeth (Liz) Kane-Leahy, and the Maybrook village board opened its Monday meeting with a moment of silence to remember her and honor her memory.

Kane-Leahy, wife of Mayor Dennis Leahy, died March 23 after a valiant five-year battle with ovarian cancer. The mayor was absent from the Monday meeting, but sent a written statement:

“The love of my life and my best friend passed away peacefully,” he wrote. “Liz was a warrior throughout her illness and fought every day to be with her family. I wish to thank everyone who reached out to me and my family at this difficult time. Words cannot express the loss we are feeling today.”

Married 40 years,Kane-Leahy, was well-known throughout the village for her quick smile and kindness.

“My heart breaks for the Leahys,” said Village Attorney Kelly Naughton.

Deputy Mayor James Barnett said: “She was a wonderful lady who always had a smile on her face. May she rest in peace.”
