Information and technology specialists and forensic experts have been working at Mount Saint Mary College over the past several weeks to resolve a cybersecurity incident recently discovered in late December in order to be ready for the upcoming spring semester.

According to the official college website, as of January 5, the following systems are currently down and are being addressed by specialists: the campus email system, the MyMSMC portal, eClass, network and printer access and swipe access to buildings with card access.

Matthew Frey, Director of Media Relations for the college said that as of Thursday, January 5, winter interim classes were running as scheduled and the spring semester classes are expected to run as well. The college is working to have the issue resolved prior to the start of the Spring semester, set to begin on Monday, January 23.

According to Frey, the school and team of experts are working to understand the extent of the incident and to restore the network safely and in a timely fashion. No immediate cause of the breach was identified. but the college is working to identify any information that may or may not have been accessed during the breach. “Mount Saint Mary College remains fully committed to the protection of information, systems security, and data privacy,” stated Frey via email.

“The dedicated faculty and staff of Mount Saint Mary College are committed to providing the exceptional educational experience that our students expect and require,” said Dr. Jason Adsit, MSMC President. “Although the current technical issues have presented challenges, we are looking forward to welcoming students back for a productive spring semester that advances them towards their educational and career goals.”

As of Monday, January 9, the website was currently unavailable to access on several browsers. Assessments of the incident are currently ongoing and may span several weeks.
