MPB School dropping grades 6-8

Most Precious Blood in Walden announced last week they’d no longer be educating grades six through eight beginning in September 2023.

The news comes as many Catholic schools are facing declining enrollment and demographic shifts.

According to the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of New York website, “Shifting demographics and lower enrollment, made worse by the pandemic, have impacted the financial stability of these schools. As painful as it sounds, keeping these schools in their current configurations is not sustainable moving forward.”

Families affected will have to transition to other local schools serving these grades for the 2023-2024 school year. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Elementary School and St. Mary School, Fishkill are options, as well as recently opened Burke Catholic Academy. Most Precious Blood will continue educating grades Pre-K through 5th.

“It is never a good day when we announce closures to any of our beloved schools, but the goal is always to strengthen the remaining institutions and preserve Catholic education in New York for decades to come,” said Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York.

Most Precious Blood in Walden is one of many schools in New York suffering from this announcement. Over ten schools in New York City will not reopen at all. All affected are encouraged and welcomed to apply for other Catholic Schools, with financial aid and scholarship opportunities available. The Office of the Superintendent of Schools will take the time to work with families to find fitting schools for students in the fall.
