Four days after believing they accepted a forfeit in the Section 3 North Senior baseball championship, Town of Newburgh-New Windsor found itself on the outside looking in.

White Plains ended Newburgh-New Windsor’s bid to return to the state championships with an 8-3 victory on Wednesday night at Mays’ Field in Washingtonville.

White Plains built an 8-0 lead throughout the game, but Newburgh-New Windsor didn’t go quietly into the night posting three runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Jadin O’Neill’s two-run double.

White Plains forced the decisive championship game after defeating Newburgh-New Windsor, 14-8, in a game that was called in the top of the fifth inning due to darkness.

The game was ended after three Newburgh-New Windsor batters hit in the fifth inning. Nick Schmidt singled, stole second and was caught stealing at third base. Nick Shala struck out and then took first on a wild pitch.

However, after Cole Mullarkey reached on an error, the home plate umpire called both coaches onto the field and announced the rest of the game was canceled. Due to Little League rules, the game could not be suspended to be completed the next day and the decisive championship game was set the following day at Washingtonville.

Frustrated Newburgh-New Windsor manager Craig Wood was ejected from the game and suspended for the following game after expressing his frustration.

It was just the latest in a frustrating four days for Newburgh-New Windsor.

The July 5th game was originally scheduled for the previous Saturday at Crawford Town Park in Pine Bush. Newburgh-New Windsor arrived at the field at 8:45 a.m. for a 10 a.m. start, but the Section 3 website still had the game listed at 1 p.m. and White Plains arrived in Pine Bush at 11:30 a.m. expecting a 1 p.m. game.

Originally the game was ruled a forfeit victory for Newburgh-New Windsor by the Charter Committee. However, later on Saturday the decision was overturned, and the game was to be rescheduled, however, White Plains declined to play until July 5.

White Plains will move onto the New York State tournament, which was scheduled to begin on Monday at Otsego Park in Dix Hills, Sussex County.

Newburgh-New Windsor played in the tournament last year, falling a game short of playing for the state championship.
