The Newburgh Free Academy wrestling team delivered a commanding performance Thursday night, rolling past Pine Bush Senior High School 67-6 in a dominant dual meet.
The Goldbacks took advantage of several forfeits while securing key victories on the mat. Cooper Merli (116 pounds) set the tone early with a first-period pin over Zachary Amon in just 1:26. Jordan Busby (124) followed with a hard-fought 6-2 decision against Griffyn Alfalla, while Yoniel Brito (145) secured a major decision, 9-1, over Josiah Hutchinson.
Newburgh’s upper weights continued the onslaught, with Christopher Leggett (215) pinning Justin Stewart in 1:38 and Anthony Weston (285) capping the night with a fall in just 1:11 over Christian Bryant. Pine Bush’s lone victory came at 170 pounds, where Logan Pennell pinned Liam Ehlers in 2:58.
The win followed a much tighter contest Tuesday, when Newburgh edged Middletown Senior High School 37-34 in a back-and-forth battle. Weston again played a pivotal role, securing the deciding points with a 4-3 decision over Damian Douglas at heavyweight.
Newburgh built an early lead behind pins from Weston Kubin (101), William Soto (108), Merli (124) and Matthew Mercado (131). Busby (116) added a 15-4 major decision, but Middletown fought back with three consecutive falls at 160, 170 and 215.
With the victories, Newburgh Free Academy continues to solidify its standing in Section 9 competition as the postseason approaches.
