Recent online threats made against the Newburgh Enlarged City School District were addressed in a statement from the district superintendent to the students, parents, teachers and stakeholders.

“The District is taking each and every threat seriously and conducting thorough investigations in collaboration with law enforcement,” said Ed Forgit, Interim Superintendent following the second threat in as many weeks. “I want to assure you that each and every threat will continue to be addressed with a high level of concern.”

Students from Newburgh Free Academy North campus were evacuated on the morning of May 2 after a bomb threat targeting the school was posted online.

According to the district website, students, faculty and staff were evacuated from the building and exited at 8:16 a.m.

Bomb sniffing dogs from the City of Newburgh Police Department, New York State Troopers and Orange County Sheriff’s Department conducted a bomb assessment.

The building was cleared for re-entry by law enforcement and students re-entered the building at 9:04 a.m. Officers were posted at the North Campus and NFA Main campus. The same day, another potential threat was made against Heritage Middle School.

Officers from the Town of New Windsor were notified, responded and were posted outside of Heritage. The school district made the decision to keep Heritage Middle School open for the day and officers were also placed at Temple Hill Academy throughout the day.

During the previous week on Tuesday, April 26, the district was placed on a two-hour delay after racially charged threats circulated online and social media. NFA Main and South campuses along were targeted in these threats the previous. Photos of the threat displayed a weapon and the reasoning for these threats indicated bullying at school.

With these recent threats, Forgit recognized and thanked the City of Newburgh Police Department, the Town of Newburgh Police Department, the Town of New Windsor Police Department, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Troopers for their work and responsiveness to these situations.

“These threats on social media are taking much needed time away from providing instruction and raising anxiety levels of the members of our school community,” he said. “We are committed to identifying each and every individual responsible for these threats.”

Forgit encouraged parents to speak with their children about these situations and to share any information they may be aware of about the individuals who may be responsible.

No arrests have been made at this time and law enforcement are still conducting their investigations.
