The Wallkill boys’ lacrosse team hadn’t lost a local game all season.
Until Sunday morning.

After the Panthers battled the Rondout Valley Ganders to a tie after three quarters, the Ganders outscored them by two goals in the fourth on their way to a 12-10 win in Sunday’s Section 9 Class C championship game at Faller Field.

The loss denied the Panthers their second straight sectional title and berth in the upcoming New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament.

They will face Section 1 champion Pelham Memorial on Wednesday at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose, Westchester County.

The championship game began Saturday but was suspended with 8:20 left in the first quarter due to thunder and lightning. After about a 50-minute delay, officials decided to postpone the remainder of the game until Sunday.

The Ganders led the Panthers, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter and the Panthers battled to tie the game at 9-9 after the third.
The Panthers advanced the finals with a 17-9 win over the Goshen Gladiators.

John Canavan scored five goals and Colin McCartney and David Goll scored three each. Robert James had two. Ty Crowley had two goals and three assists, and Richard Martinez had a goal and three assists. Julian Gries added a goal.

Alec Petroccelli-Henry had 10 saves and Michael Locicero made three. Austin Palen won 22 of 25 faceoffs.

Evan Pupo scored four goals for Goshen and Mario Alfieri scored two goals and had an assist. Gavin Duggan had two goals and an assist. Dwane Schiafo scored a goal, and Jake Tedeschi had 11 saves.
