A Newburgh man was taken into custody Friday evening after attempting to discard a stash of cocaine.

On January 22nd at approximately 7:40 p.m., City of Newburgh officers were patrolling the Broadway and Lutheran corridor in response to numerous citizen complaints referencing open air drug trafficking.

Officers observed a crowd on the corner of Broadway & Lutheran and witnessed a narcotics transaction initiated by a tall black male wearing a tan jacket. Officers exited their police vehicle and approached the male wearing the tan jacket. When the male observed officers he attempted to flee on foot and a short foot pursuit ensued. During the foot pursuit the male discarded a plastic bag which contained a white rock-like substance which field tested positive for the presence of cocaine and weighed approximately 6.32 grams.

During the foot pursuit one of the officers sustained an injury to his leg and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The male was identified as City of Newburgh resident Connie Boykin, age 49.

Boykin is being charged with Assault 2nd degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance  4th. Boykin was also charged with a violation of parole.

Boykin was held pending arraignment on January 23rd  at approximately 9 a.m.
