Plan approved for 842 Broadway

Newburgh City Council approved the site development agreement between the city and Shaul and Eli Vaknin for the redevelopment of the 842 Broadway gas station. Councilman Omari Shakur voted no against the motion.

The burnt out eyesore known as 842 Broadway may see new life once again with a proposal for a new two story commercial building with restaurant business spaces on the first floor and office spaces on the second floor.

Additional parking in front of the building and new access points to the site are also proposed along with a new patio area overlooking the Quassaick Creek.
842 Broadway, formerly known as Dennis’s Service Center, operated on Broadway for many years until it burned down in December of 2018.

Firefighters battled the flames for several hours but the building was destroyed and in June 2019, Derry passed away.

A request for proposal [RFP] had been sent out by the city for any interested parties to acquire the site back in September 2021 and Chestnut Petroleum Distributors, Inc. [CPD] had appeared and expressed interest in the property.

CPD had presented a new proposal for a new retail facility rather than a new gas station. In the RFP, CPD would have been responsible for above ground remediation while New York State would be responsible for the underground remediation. However CPD did not move forward with the project and the reason for the departure from the project was unclear.
