Ryan defeats Schmitt in 18th Congressional race

Newly-elected Congressman Pat Ryan, fresh from victory in a special election in the 19th Congressional District, was elected to a full term on the Hill, Tuesday, capturing the newly-redrawn 18th Congressional District that includes Orange and Ulster Counties.

Ryan, the former Ulster County Executive, defeated Assemblyman Colin J. Schmitt in a bitter campaign that featured negative television ads and mailings.

Ryan, who made abortion rights the center of his campaign,  captured 50.4 percent of the vote, according to the Associated Press.

“From day one, we made it clear: our fight is to protect fundamental freedoms and democracy. To deliver relief and results for families. Twice in as many months, we stood together on the side of freedom. I am honored to continue serving you in Congress.,” Ryan said. “Thank you, NY-18.”

Schmitt conceded earlier in the evening.

“After a hard-fought campaign the people of our district made their choice and I respect their decision. I wish the best for Pat Ryan and hope he will do great things for our Hudson Valley families. I thank my wife Nikki, my family, friends, supporters, and team for all their dedication and commitment given to this campaign. We left it all on the field and I am proud to have been in the arena fighting for my home community.”

Ryan was elected in August in a special election to fill a vacancy created when Antonio Delgado was appointed Lieutenant Governor.
