Spend your Saturday in Cornwall

This might be the perfect way to spend Saturday, Nov. 30 in Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson:

Head out to breakfast at a local restaurant or coffee shop; stop by the Lions Club greenery sale in the Town Hall parking lot for a wreath and/or roping; visit the Cornwall-Highlands Arts Association’s ‘Holiday Artisan Market’ at Munger Cottage; get some lunch in the community; head to Main St. and local stores for the Cornwall Special Events Committee’s ‘Shop Small Saturday event’ in the afternoon; get some dinner locally; and then enjoy the Cornwall-on-Hudson Special Events Committee and Cornwall Youth Committee’s annual ‘Tree Lighting’ at the village square.

You wouldn’t have to leave the community, and you’d have a great day!

The first thing you can do is stop by the Town Hall parking lot to visit Lions Club members at their annual Wreaths and Roping Sale. It’s from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. If you miss them on Saturday, they’ll be there on Sunday, Dec. 1 also, and then continue for the next few weekends, as long as supplies last.

New this year, as they continue to work to support not only the local community but the greater New York, United States and World, the Lions are collecting old broken crayons that will be then sent on to the Crayon Initiative. They’ll be melted down and refigured into new crayons and delivered to hospitals across the country. What a great way to recycle. After the holidays are over, the Lions will have collection bins in several locations around the community.

Next, head over to Munger Cottage, where the Cornwall-Highlands Arts Association (CHAA) Holiday Artisan Market will take place (55 Munger Drive, Cornwall) from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. For more information visit cornwallhighlandsarts.org.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to support talented local artisans and shop for unique, handcrafted gifts for the holidays,” CHAA President Rebecca Kashinski said this week. “There will be a wide variety of artisans selling original artwork, pottery, jewelry, wooden works, ornaments, locally designed clothing, live succulents, and more!”

Starting at 3:30 p.m. and lasting until 6:30 p.m. is the Hometown Holiday Shop Small Event, hosted by the Cornwall Events Committee. It all takes place on Main St. – plan to park and take a stroll! There will be music, festive foods, horse and carriage rides, crafts to do, and, of course, shopping. Local merchants are expected to have some deals – “Some with a holiday twist!” says organizer Dawn Kilgore -- you won’t want to miss.

There will be an Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt for a prize, raffle opportunities with purchase and a decoration contest for the businesses – you’ll see that winning business on as the cover photo of the Living in Cornwall, NY Facebook for the month of December.

In addition to businesses, the Lions Club will be on hand to take preorders for some more of their wreaths and roping (in case you didn’t get to visit them earlier!), the Knights of Columbus will be selling poinsettias, the Cornwall Clean Up Crew will be selling diamond painted key chains as they fundraise for a shed, and Wreaths Across America representatives will be making a last push for volunteers and donations for their December wreath-placing at St. Thomas of Canterbury Cemetery. There will be sweet treats for sale in several locations, so bring your appetite!

Finally, all are invited to the Cornwall-on-Hudson Special Events Committee/Cornwall Youth Committee’s annual Village Tree Lighting, which will take place from 5-7 p.m., in the village square (Hudson St.). It’s all free.

A very special guest – straight from the North Pole – will be arriving around 5:15 or 5:30 p.m., the Special Events Committee’s Mike Trainor said last week.
