Street renamed in honor of lifelong resident

Posted

City of Newburgh residents gathered on Saturday, May 21, at the intersection of Liberty and Farrington Street for the renaming of the street to Terry “LD” Williams Place.

The renaming of the street was in honor of Terry “LD” Williams of 280 Liberty Street, a lifelong resident of the City of Newburgh who passed away in November 2020.

According to Mayor Torrance Harvey, where Audrey Carey Park now stands is where Williams learned to play basketball and where residents also enjoyed tournaments held at various times during the year.

Williams was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy in 1983 and went on to play collegiate basketball at Southern Methodist University in Texas. Williams entered the National Basketball Association [NBA] Draft and was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the 1987 Draft and played on a one year contract. Williams also played basketball overseas in Argentina and won a title with that organization.

Williams is the younger brother of Denise Williams-Woody. Williams-Woody is the wife of Bishop Jeffery Woody, Pastor of Cathedral at the House on Broadway. The family contacted the mayor and city council and a unanimous resolution was passed in September 2021 to rename the street.

In honor of his birthday on May 21, the naming was done on that day to celebrate him.
