Ulster County District Attorney Dave Clegg has decided he will not seek re-election.

“I have decided to pass the torch and, until the end of my term in December, I will continue to devote all my time and energy to making this office the best that it can be. We now have by far the most diverse, multilingual and multi-talented group of Assistant District Attorneys this office has ever had,” said Clegg.

“Since assuming this position in January 2020, this office also has had more than its fair share of challenges, ranging from a complete shift in discovery laws, creating additional burdens on the prosecution, to mass attrition of ADAs state-wide, to a once-in-a-century pandemic. In spite of it all, we have rebuilt the office and had many successes.”

Clegg said he will continue his vocation as an ordained Deacon in the United Methodist Church, and will spend more time with his wife, Karen, and family.

To date, two candidates have emerged for District Attorney: former candidate Michael Kavanagh (son of a former District Attorney) and former Assistant District Attorney Jarrid Blades have entered the race.
