Valley Central Shakespeare Club presents ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Posted

The Valley Central Shakespeare Club is bringing William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” to the stage at Valley Central High School. The performances will take place on October 25 and 26 at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. Admission is free, with donations appreciated to help support the club’s future productions. No reservations are necessary.

The production marks the seventh play staged by the club, which was founded in 2019 by a group of students in the school’s Shakespeare elective class. Under the guidance of club advisor David Don Miller, the club has grown steadily, aiming to present Shakespeare’s timeless themes in a contemporary context.

“We stage these plays as if Shakespeare were still alive today,” Miller said, highlighting how the club’s approach updates costume, set, and sound designs while addressing the still-relevant subjects of the Bard’s work.

The cast includes Gibril Sanchez-Sharif as Romeo, Laura Barnett as Juliet, John Miller as Mercutio, and Alexa Fowler as Benvolio. The production also features a full ensemble of students, including Angela Barry, Tony Napoleon, and Gabriella Wildrick.

Behind the scenes, the creative team includes stage managers Dilynn Senerat and Nathan Lee, with Sean Maher and Daniel Walker operating the soundboard.

The club hopes to maintain free access to their productions but faces rising technical and artistic costs. Donations can be made in the lobby, where souvenir show buttons and refreshments will be available for contributions.

“We could not be happier that you are here to watch our show,” Miller said, encouraging attendees to support the club’s future efforts.
