Walden Police thwart possible suicide attempt

Man removed from railing on Lower Bridge

Posted

On March 4, at approximately 6:15 a.m., the Village of Walden Police Department was notified of an apparently intoxicated subject sitting on the railing of the Lower Bridge (Oak Street) in Walden.

Upon arrival to the scene, Officers Rios and Bongiorno observed the subject with his feet over the railing closest to the water side. The subject was in an agitated state, yelling at them to stay away. Rios began to engage the subject in conversation while Bongiorno approached the subject from the opposite side. As Bongiorno got closer to the subject, this distracted the subject away from Officer Rios. Officer Rios, without hesitation, then grabbed the subject and physically pulled him off the railing onto the ground to safety.

Police report that the individual was detained until the arrival of the ambulance. He was then transported to Garnet Hospital for further evaluation. No additional information regarding the subject is available at this time.

The Village of Walden Police Department would like to extend its deepest appreciation and thanks to Officers Rios and Bongiorno for their quick and attentive action that likely saved a life.
