Wallkill doubles team reaches MHAL semifinals

Wallkill’s J.J. Wagner and the doubles team of Ryan Greene and Eric Blackshear each finished fourth at the Mid Hudson Athletic League boys’ tennis championships on May 17 in Dutchess County.

Their Top 4 finish placed them all in the upcoming Section 9 tournament, scheduled for this week at Match Point Tennis in Goshen.

Marco Martini and Ben Buchalter also qualified for sectionals by reaching the quarterfinals.

Wagner reached the semifinals, where he was defeated by Rhinebeck’s Marc Hoffman, 6-2, 6-2. He then fell in the third-place match, 7-6, 3-6,6-1 to Saugerties’ Veer Mitra.

Greene and Blackshear were beaten in the semifinals by Red Hook’s Patrick Horiszny and Brendan Donohue, 6-3, 6-3. They also lost in the third-place match, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Wagner advanced to the semifinals by posting a 6-1, 6-4 win over Spackenkill’s Christian Balbo. The win also cemented his spot in the upcoming Section 9 tournament, scheduled for this week at Match Point Tennis Center in Goshen.

He opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Onteora’s Noah Stern.
Greene and Blackshear advanced to the semifinals and punched their sectionals ticket with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over FDR’s Waheed Saroyia and Cameron Ottaviani. They opened the tournament with 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Onteora’s James Lynch and Takemi Sono-Knowles in the second round.

Wagner was the only Panther to participate in singles competition. However, in addition to Greene and Blackshear, the Panthers placed two other doubles teams in the tournament.

Martini and Buchalter advanced to the quarterfinals, where they lost 6-1, 6-3, by the tournament’s top seeds, Spackenkill’s Edison Sung and Elena Sung. They beat New Paltz’s Lucas Weinman and Ryan Nastasi in the second round, 6-2, 7-5.

Mark Winters and Tyler DePuy were eliminated in the second round by Marlboro’s Adrien Gueren and Collin Benninger, 6-0, 6-2.
