Wallkill men dominate, Women 4th at OCIAA Divisional championship

The Wallkill High School indoor track team had a standout performance at the OCIAA Divisional Championship on January 17 at Gillis Field House, West Point. The Wallkill men claimed the team title with 121 points, while the women placed fourth with 87 points. New Paltz topped the women’s standings with 129 points.

Men’s Highlights
The Wallkill men showed their depth across track and field events, highlighted by two individual victories from senior Mario Verruto. Verruto won the 1600 meters with a time of 4:40.76 and the 3200 meters in 9:44.83, a personal record. Sophomore Nathaniel Diemoz added a victory in the 1000 meters (2:44.71), also a personal best.

In sprints, junior Jason Collazo placed third in the 55-meter dash prelims (6.83), setting a season record, while junior Kent Glasgow Jr. placed sixth in the finals (7.00). In the 300 meters, junior Jamison Warren took fourth with a time of 38.36.

The Wallkill men excelled in relays, winning the 4x800 relay in 8:56.48 and placing third in the 4x400 relay (3:59.85). Field events also played a crucial role, as junior Mason Birdsell took first in the long jump (19-09.50), and senior Harold Bruggemann finished third in the weight throw (34-02.25).

Women’s Highlights
On the women’s side, senior Mayah Simon delivered Wallkill’s lone event win, taking first in the 1500-meter racewalk with a season-best time of 8:26.22. Junior Lailani Gaston also stood out, winning the 55-meter hurdles finals in 9.79, a personal record.

Sophomore Ella Russell had a strong showing in the 600 meters, finishing second with a personal best of 1:55.96. The women’s relay teams were competitive, with the 4x400 relay placing second (4:44.98) and the 4x200 relay finishing third (1:59.79).

Field performances included a victory in the weight throw by junior Ariana Reyes, who recorded a season-best 33-02.00. Senior Elena Sindt contributed third-place finishes in both the high jump (4-06.00) and long jump (14-07.50).
