The Wallkill Central School District Board of Education passed on Wednesday, February 15, a partial tax exemption up to 10% of assessed property value for volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers. The exemption was approved as part of the board’s consent agenda. A public hearing was held at 6:30 p.m. at Leptondale Elementary School with no comments on the item.

The partial exemption will qualify for volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers or qualified spouses of such workers at the decision of the city, village, town, school district, fire district or county. Applicants for the exemption must live in the Wallkill district, the property must be the primary residence of the applicant, the property is used for residential purposes and the applicant must be certified. In addition, volunteer members with over 20 years of service shall be eligible for the exemption for the remainder of their life and will be available for un-remarried spouses or volunteers killed in the line of duty. The applicant should file with the assessor on or before the taxable status date.
