Wallkill sets hearing for First Responder exemption

The Wallkill Central School District will host a public hearing Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Leptondale Elementary School at 48 Mill Street regarding a partial tax exemption up to 10% of assessed property value for volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers.

The partial exemption will qualify for volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers or qualified spouses of such workers at the decision of the city, village, town, school district, fire district or county after a public hearing. Applicants must live in the Wallkill district, the property must be the primary residence of the applicant, the property is used for residential purposes and the applicant must be certified. In addition, members with over 20 years of service shall be eligible for the exemption for the remainder of their life and will be available for un-remarried spouses or volunteers killed in the line of duty. The applicant should file with the assessor on or before the taxable status date.
