After a 2024 season marked by inconsistency and disconnection, Wallkill varsity softball is turning the page — and turning heads.
With a 3-0 start to the 2025 campaign, the Panthers are showing what can happen when talent meets team chemistry. Their latest win came Wednesday in an 8-5 road victory over defending Section IX Class B champion Highland, powered by a 15-hit performance and standout play from junior catcher Gianna Allesandro.
“She might be the best catcher in the league,” Wallkill head coach Sean Murphy said. “There are a lot of really good ones, but I take her a thousand times out of a thousand.”
Allesandro went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored two runs and drove in one — her best offensive performance since April 2024. Her work behind the plate and leadership have been instrumental in the Panthers’ early success.
Senior Mikaela McCue also delivered, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, while sophomore Ava O’Flaherty added three hits and a run scored. Wallkill used a balanced offensive attack, with seven different players recording at least one hit.
The Panthers, who struggled at times to gel last season, have leaned into building trust and unity this year. Murphy credits an offseason of growth and reflection as the catalyst for the turnaround.
“It took a step back to figure out where we needed to be,” Murphy said. “Now, they’re recognizing each other’s strengths and playing as one unit.”
Senior shortstop Charley Callahan, now settled into her natural position, is one of several returning players thriving in 2025. With the support of a versatile offense, Wallkill’s pitching duo of Madison Auger and Emma Hunt is also expected to make a major impact moving forward.
Wallkill’s win over Highland marked the second straight meeting in which the Panthers topped the Huskies. The team will look to extend its undefeated run and continue proving that this year’s cohesion can carry them deep into the postseason.
