Walter H. Karsten, a lifelong resident of Montgomery, passed away in the early hours of December 4, 2022 with his wife and daughter at his side.  

Walter was the son of Beatrice Stevens Karsten and Walter G. Karsten.

Walter was very active in the Montgomery community.  He served as chairman of the Montgomery Fire Commissioners for many years and was on the Board of Directors of the Orange County Firefighters Museum.  He also served on the Town of Montgomery Board of Assessment until his illness and served as a past Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Montgomery.  Walt took great pride in his U.S. Navy service and was an active member in the American Legion Post 521 as well as the Maybrook VFW.  He also was a member of Masonic Lodge Wallkill 627.  After retirement from United Parcel Service, Walt made his hobby of collecting antique tools a business.   He traveled the entire east coast buying and selling tools at auctions and flea markets.  He was member of various tool collectors' organizations.

Walter is survived by his wife, Diane, and daughter Erin Karsten of Australia.  He is also survived by his sister, Janice Odensky, and her children.  Walt was pre-deceased by a brother Roy Karsten and his parents.

Viewing will be Tuesday, December 20, from 10 am to  12 noon at the Overhiser Funeral Home on Union Street, Montgomery.  We will then move to the First Presbyterian Church, located at 137 Clinton Street, Montgomery, for services at 12:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 8, Montgomery NY 12549.
