23rd annual Corinne Feller Memorial Tournament underway

Hudson Valley girls’ basketball teams will remember one of their own as they take part in the 23rd Annual Corinne Feller Memorial Basketball Tournament at Valley Central High School this week. The tournament will kick off the Valley Central Varsity Girls’ season.

Four area teams, Marlboro, Middletown, John S. Burke and Valley Central, will compete. Games were scheduled to take place at 5:30 and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday of this week with the championship game tipping off at 7 p.m. on December 1.

Corinne Feller was a scholar athlete at Valley Central High School whose life was cut short by ovarian cancer at age 18. She was beloved throughout Section IX and remembered as both an outstanding player and person who cared about the less fortunate and the environment.

Corinne’s niece, Jenna O’Connor, is currently a sophomore forward/center on the Valley Central team.

“We invite the community to celebrate Corinne’s life and support the young athletes in our community by coming out to the tournament,” said Ron Feller, Corinne’s father and tournament organizer. “It’s a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season and it’s all for a great cause!”

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Corinne Feller Scholarship Fund administered by the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan. More than $70,000 has been awarded to graduating Valley Central students in Corinne’s name since the fund was established. Online donations are also being accepted at cfosny.org.

The Valley Central High School PTA will provide food for purchase at the games. Tournament attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Montgomery Food Pantry.
