Crawford adopts tax exemptions

The Town of Crawford introduced a new local law on October 27 that would amend the real property tax exemption for senior citizens.

Section one of the local law states that this applies to property owned by one person who is 65 years or older, a married couple or siblings, one of whom is above 65, or those with disabilities and limited income who are 65 years and older. It also applies to multiple people living together with each being 65 or over.

For instance if the annual income is less than $20,000, the percentage of taxes exempt is 50. If you make $20,000 but less than $21,000, it’s 45 percent and so on. Town Supervisor Charles E. Carnes noted it is a five percent change as the exemption percent decreases. For example, once you get to $27,500 but less than $28,400, the exemption is 5%.
