Longtime planning board member and town councilman Rory Holmes is officially resigning from the Crawford Town Board after 13 years of service for both boards.

Holmes’ announced his plans of moving to Tennessee at his last board meeting as councilman on Thursday, January 19, explaining that he’ll be retiring there with his wife. He was met with an outpour of support from fellow board members, Town Supervisor Charles Carnes and County Legislator Robert Sassi.

“Rory, thanks a million. You’ve done a fantastic job and we’re gonna miss you but good luck in Tennessee,” said Carnes.

Holmes also received a Distinguished Service Award from Sassi on behalf of Orange County as well as a Certificate of Recognition from Carnes.

“While having served on a town board myself for several years, I knew that Rory was a perfect fit when I moved on to the legislature,” said Sassi, who served on the Crawford Town Board from 2012 to 2017. Sassi now represents District 18 which includes the Town of Crawford and Wallkill.

The town board also gave Holmes a gift certificate to Foothills Milling Company, a fine dining restaurant in Maryville, Tennessee. “I’ve never been there but I hear it’s one of the nicest places. I did make a phone call,” said Carnes.

Holmes also reflected on his time with the board, mentioning that his retirement was bittersweet. “I’ve been planning for years and it’s kind of bittersweet for me,, but it’s also ‘on to the next chapter,’” noted Holmes.

Holmes’ resignation will be effective beginning February 1, 2023. After this, town board members will decide on a replacement.

“The Town Board will decide in February on a replacement to take Mr. Holmes’ position until the November election,” Carnes said.
