MS1 Ernest A. Hennig, a proud Navy veteran, passed away December 30, 2022 at Castle Point VA Hospital.  

He was born to Adolph and Elsie Hennig on 3 September 1943 in Brooklyn NY and grew up in Middletown NY.  In 1961, at the age of 18 he joined the Navy and attended Mess Management Specialist School. 

 He was in the Navy for 20 years and was stationed on various ships including minesweepers, sub tenders and aircraft carriers.  He did two tours in Vietnam with NMCB 7 cooking for the Sea Bees and one onboard the USS Intrepid off the coast.  His awards include Fleet Marine Combat Operations insignia, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, National Defense Service Medal and 4 Good Conduct Medals. He is predeceased by his parents, Adolph and Elsie and his sister Deanna Basel.  

He is survived by his brother in law, Frank Basel of Walker Valley, two Nephews, Eric Basel of Surry VA, and Andy Basel of Middletown, a niece Gretchen Breland and Great Nephew Matthew Breland and Great Great Niece Ila Mae Breland all of Gulfport MS, and Great Nephew Brandon Breland of Colorado Springs CO. Ernest will be cremated and his remains interred at Walker Valley Cemetery on Monday January 9 at 1pm with full military honors.
