It’s time to pass the NY HEAT Act

It’s time for New York State to continue the momentum of phasing out fossil fuels for good and pass the NY HEAT Act. The many benefits of doing so include saving money on our electric bills, something that would make a big difference both to myself and my fellow New Yorkers. It also ends the subsidies for running new gas lines that are part of our monthly gas bills.

If the legislature wants to prioritize affordability for families across the state as we meet our climate goals, then NY HEAT is the way to do that. The NY HEAT Act (formerly the Gas Transition and Affordable Energy Act) ensures that New York State will be able to meet the crucial climate justice and greenhouse gas emission reduction mandates set forth in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act for buildings without sticking everyday New Yorkers with the bill. It also puts a price cap of 6% of income on electricity bills for low- and middle-income families to ensure energy stays affordable.

As a state we’ve made great strides to meeting our climate goals and many thanks to Senators James Skoufis and Michelle Hinchey for their continued advocacy. Let’s keep the momentum going!
