Local wrestlers have early exit at Division 1 duals

All three local wrestling teams were eliminated in their first match of the Section 9 Division I Duals tournament on January 9 as the tournament opened at multiple sites.
The Wallkill Panthers, seeded second in the tournament, received a bye to the quarterfinals but were upended by the seventh-seeded Cornwall Dragons, 33-29, in the quarterfinals.

The Panthers fell behind 21-0 as they lost their first five bouts of the match before Julian Aviles broke the ice at 285 pounds with a pinfall victory over Gabriel Dayton. Marco Futia followed with a pinfall victory over Ealan Roig to cut the Dragons’ lead to 21-12 after 102 pounds.

The Panthers closed the Dragons’ lead to two points on two separate occasions, the first when Rocco Futia defeated Marco Giumarra, 4-2, at 118 pounds in a situation where a pin would have given the Panthers a one-point lead.

However, Cornwall’s Antony Valicenti (126) and Wallkill’s Viktor Banda (132) traded pins to cut Cornwall’s lead back to two, but Wallkill’s Cameron Lopez injury defaulted to Aaron Caoili to give the Dragons the match.

Ben Buchalter finished the match with a major decision over Christian Turingan.

The Dragons eliminated both local teams as they opened the tournament with a 54-15 win over No. 10 Pine Bush.
The Dragons got pinfall victories from Nicholas Cavallo (172), Liam Scott (189), Gavin Furst (215), Gabriel Dayton (285), Keaton Vanarchick (110), Giumarra (118), and Caoili (138).

Gabriel McNally (102) and Logan Pennell (132) had pinfall victories for Bushmen. Ethan Conrow (152) won his match in six minutes, 6-4, over Patrick Cosgrove.

The Valley Central Vikings were seeded ninth and competed at Newburgh Free Academy against the host No. 8 Goldbacks, losing 56-12.

Luke Satriano (118) and Michael Giannoni (132) picked up the only victories for the Vikings, both pins.

Kevin Segali (145), Joseph Ponesse (172), Christopher Leggett (189), Devi Iturralde (215), and Ivan Duran (138) won by pinfall.
