Maybrook Girl Scouts want a little food pantry

At last week’s on-line Maybrook Village Board meeting, Cadettes farom Girl Scout Troop 61 in the Town of Montgomery described a “little food pantry” project they want to create in Maybrook.

“The girls learn what our community needs from us and then take action,” explained Troop leader Norelis Santiago. Because the Montgomery Food Pantry isn’t always open and because the COVID pandemic has increased food insecurity for many, the nine sixth-grade Cadettes, who have been together in the troop since first grade, decided on a “little food pantry”, similar to others throughout the country, which would be accessible to people 24-7.

Santiago said the project’s motto is “leave what you can; take what you need”. The small, pantry cabinet-like would be stocked with non-perishable items and canned goods. The girls would monitor the pantry, checking it for overflow or to see if it needed more food items. In addition to residents “leaving what they can”, the girls will also seek donations from businesses and would set up donation boxes at various businesses.

They made their presentation to the village board to seek approval to set up the pantry on the grounds of the Maybrook Senior Center.

“A lot of events happen there, a lot of people go there,” said Cadette Peyton Culhane who is herself a Maybrook resident.

The village board liked the idea, with Mayor Dennis Leahy promising to meet with them and village DPW Supt. Matt Thorp to discuss the pantry’s exact location.

“Thanks for looking out for Maybrook,” Mayor Dennis Leahy praised, with Deputy Mayor Robert Pritchard adding, “It’s a good idea. If Maybrook has a middle name, it’s scouts!”
