The Wallkill Panthers were unable to stop the Beacon Bulldogs from reaching their fourth straight Section 9 championship game.
Beacon’s Jake Deluise delivered what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 75th minute, as the second-seeded Bulldogs handed the No. 3 Panthers a 2-1 loss in Thursday’s Section 9 Class A semifinal boys’ soccer game at Beacon High School.
Beacon’s Brevin Timm sent a free kick toward the Wallkill goal from just beyond midfield. The ball ricocheted off Wallkill goalkeeper Geovanny Hernandez and toward Deluise, who redirected it back into the goal for the lead.
Beacon’s Jaidyn Caccomo got his team on the board first early in the game with a goal, off an assist from Brody Timm. Edward Vargas tied the game for the Panthers in the game’s 20th minute when he blasted a goal from 30 yards out just under the crossbar.
The Panthers opened the tournament on Oct. 29 with a 3-0 win over the No. 6 Saugerties Sawyers at Wallkill High School’s Robinson Field.
Vargas scored all three goals.
The Bulldogs moved on to Saturday’s Section 9 Class A championship game against the top seeded Our Lady of Lourdes Warriors, who defeated the No. 4 New Paltz Huguenots, 2-0, in Thursday’s other semifinal, on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Middletown High School’s Faller Field.
The Panthers finished the season with an 11-6-0 record and will lose seven players off this year’s team: Freddy Arias, George Avila, Ronal Castro, David Cruz, Brent DeCoeur, Juan Ortega, Ethan Pomeroy, and Vargas.
