The Pine Bush girls’ lacrosse team was playing without one of its top players but had enough offense to build an early lead in an 11-5 non-league win over the Wallkill Panthers on Thursday afternoon at Pine Bush Elementary School.

With Sophia Licardi on the bench with a knee injury, Samantha Budney and Fiona Varley helped make up the difference with three goals apiece.

The Bushmen jumped ahead early, taking a 3-1 lead over the Panthers after the game’s first 10 minutes until Lillian Atria gave the Bushmen a 4-1 lead with 15:56 left in the first half. Julia Tanner followed four minutes later with a goal of her own.

The Bushmen then followed with three more goals in the space of two minutes to build up a 7-1 lead.

That’s when the Panthers finally responded offensively as Wallkill’s Grace Winchell found the back of the cage to pull the Panthers to within five goals. About a minute later, Budney scored to restore the Panthers’ six-goal lead.

Then with 4:21 left in the first half, Jazmin Medina scored to cut the Bushmen’s lead to 8-3 at halftime.

The second half continued at a much slower pace for Pine Bush, as the Bushmen only outscored the Panthers 3-2 in the game’s final 25 minutes.

Atria and Julia Tanner finished the game with two goals each for the Bushmen, while Kate Harris added one.

Medina led the Panthers with two goals and Winchell and Emma Dilemme added one each. Brianna Merrill scored a goal and registered an assist.

Two days earlier, the Bushmen had lost an 11-5 league contest to the Kingston Tigers. Their win on Thursday brought them to a 5-5 record on the season. They are 2-1 in their league schedule, which guarantees them a .500 record.

The Bushmen’s one remaining league game is scheduled for Friday against the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders.

The Panthers, meanwhile, continue to tread water during their first season as a varsity program. Their loss to Pine Bush on Thursday dropped their overall record to 5-4. They are currently 22-2 in their conference with remaining league games against the Cornwall Dragons, Washingtonville Wizards and Valley Central Vikings.

Their goal remains to make it to the Section 9 Class B playoffs to cap off their first varsity season.

The Panthers opened the week with a 4-0 win over the FDR Presidents on April 25.
