PB qualifies two in Section 9 tennis

Pine Bush qualified two singles players and Valley Central qualified a doubles team for this week’s Section 9 girls’ tennis championships with quarterfinal appearances in last week’s Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association championships.

Pine Bush’s Megan Maragliano, the tournament’s fifth seed, reached the quarterfinals, where she was eliminated 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) by the tournament’s second seed, Middletown’s Cymone Crump. Her teammate, the seventh seeded Tiffany Manikoth Sooksavath, was eliminated by Goshen’s Norah Staunton, 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Maragliano opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Kingston’s Aliyah Faircloth and Manikoth-Sooksavath beat Washingtonville’s Emily Deluca, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.

Valley Central’s doubles team of Talia Wutz and Taylor Froehlich was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Monroe-Woodbury’s third-seeded team of Amaya Grant and Brooks Reese.

Wutz and Froelich opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Port Jervis’ Brielle Rene and Elissa Santini, and won their second-round match over Warwick’s Clara Calandra and Caitlin Emmanuel, the tournament’s sixth seed, 6-4, 7-5.

Pine Bush’s doubles team of Sabrina Steixner and Nikki Ahmataj opened the tournament with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Minisink Valley’s Holly Kulynych and Caitlyn Higby, but were eliminated in the second round, 6-2, 6-1 by Newburgh’s Jade Garay and Gaelen Pollick. Giovanna Brooks and Peyton Dewitt were eliminated in the first round by Monroe-Woodbury’s Ava Cherian and Ella Cherian.

Valley Central’s seventh-seeded team of Christina Faso and Megan Mann received a bye to the second round, where Goshen’s Serena Keddu and Emma Shorter eliminated them, 6-2, 6-4.

MHAL Championships
All of the Wallkill Panthers were eliminated from the Mid Hudson Athletic League championships at FDR on Thursday and Friday.

No. 12 Sydney Scannell was eliminated in the first round by a 7-4, 1-6, 6-1, loss to Saugerties’ Amy Hoyt.

The Panthers’ No. 16 double team of Zacharia Williams and Ariana Martinez were eliminated by the top-seeded team from Our Lady of Lourdes. The seventh-seeded team of Mia Gigliuto and Marissa Daughter were eliminated in the first round by the No. 11 team of Adjoua Kirton and Elia Bonavoglia of Our Lady of Lourdes.
