Mike Gillespie has been the athletic director at Pine Bush High School for six years.

That makes the Class of 2022, the first Pine Bush High School senior class that he has seen through their entire interscholastic athletic careers in the district.

Some of them were playing on the district’s modified programs, while some of the more exceptional athletes were taking their APP tests to compete with the varsity.

The Athletic Dept. honored 21 the district’s 21 seniors that will play sports in college at a ceremony on June 7 in the Pine Bush High School new gym.

Three athletes will continue their athletic careers at a Division I college. Standout swimmer Elishka Hajek will take her talents to Campbell University. Mack Carr will be part of the Syracuse University Crew team, while Deana Sheremeta will be part of the George Mason University gymnastics team.

Two athletes will go to Division II schools. Joe Gleason has signed to play baseball at Mansfield University and Alandra Hasbrouck will play volleyball at Kutztown University.

The baseball and volley teams, both of which made the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Final Four in their respective seasons have three athletes each playing in college.

In addition to Hasbrouck, Jersey Jones and Zoe Rodi will play volleyball in college, and Joseph Sorge and Joshua Martin will continue their baseball careers in college.

Rodi, who will attend SUNY Delhi is the only one of Pine Bush’s graduating seniors who plans to play two sports in college. In addition to volleyball, Rodi will run on Delhi’s track team.

The softball team is also sending three players into the interscholastic ranks. Katherine Greer will play at SUNY Geneseo, Nate Burley is headed to Skidmore College, while Kaeli Murtagh is heading to SUNY Cortland.

The track team has the most athletes continuing in college with four. In addition to Rodi, Eric Anderson will run at SUNY Cortland, Stephen Gihr will throw at Misericordia University and Oluseye Ilori will attend SUNY Brockport.

Gillespie also highlighted how few high school athletes make the transition to college.

According to data from the NCAA, 7.5 percent of high school athletes move on to the NCAA, while 3.5 percent of men’s basketball players move on. About 4 percent of high school volleyball players play in college, while 5.6 percent of softball players play in college.
