The run had to end eventually.

The Pine Bush Bushmen, the longtime defending Section 9 volleyball champions, were denied a return trip to the championship game when the rising third-seeded Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks swept them, 3-0, in Thursday’s Section 9 Class AAA semifinal at Pine Bush High School.

The Goldbacks went on to face the top-seeded Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders on Saturday morning at Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh.

The Bushmen swept the Goldbacks during their two regular season meetings in Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association play.

The Bushmen, a young team, with only four seniors, the rest are juniors and sophomores and one freshman – Madeline Doyle – which leaves coach Melyssa Klempner-Amelio excited for what the Bushmen can accomplish in the future.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first set, before the Goldbacks outlasted them, 25-23.
The Bushmen looked to even things in the second set and were one point away from doing so with a 24-20 lead. They were unable to close out the Goldbacks, who rallied on a strong service run by Carmen Burgarelli to take a 25-24 lead.

Then on the next play, the Goldbacks were unable to close out the Bushmen and the teams battled back and forth until a short hit by Pine Bush’s Alyssa Magsamen gave the Goldbacks a 29-27 win in the set and a 2-0 lead.

The Goldbacks, who had the Bushmen on their heels, now opened an 11-3 lead in the third set. The Bushmen closed the gap to 16-13 on an ace by Kayla Dec, but another strong service run by Burgarelli opened the lead and the Goldbacks went on to close out Pine Bush’s season with a 25-19 win to finish the sweep.

The Bushmen finished the season with a 10-5 record.
