Pine Bush Seniors claim state title

The Pine Bush senior softball team went winless through its first three games on the New York State tournament last weekend.

However, with the bottom seed in hand, Pine Bush’s fortunes turned around on Sunday with victories over both top-seeded Larchmont-Mamaroneck and No. 2 New City to win the state championship on Sunday night at the home of New City Little League.

That means manager Stan Wilson’s final run with this group of players will continue into the Little League International’s East regional tournament, beginning on Saturday in Worcester, MA.

Pine Bush will compete in Pool B with the champions from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. After playing four games between Saturday and Monday morning, the top 4 teams in each pool will move onto a single-elimination tournament. The semifinals and championship games will be played on Tuesday.

Pine Bush’s state tournament got off to a rough start on Friday when they were edged, 8-6, by New City, the first of three straight losses. They came back on Saturday and opened the day with a 12-11 loss to Brighton. They finished the day with a 15-3 loss to Larchmont-Mamaroneck, sending them to the No. 4 seed in Sunday’s single-elimination tournament.

That’s when things turned around. They avenged the previous night’s loss to Larchmont-Mamaroneck with a 5-4 victory to clinch their second meeting with New City, a game they won 22-13.
