The Pine Bush Bushmen only had one superstar swimmer left, and she did her job.
Pine Bush senior Sadie DeGeorge won two individual events and was part of one winning relay as the Pine Bush Bushmen climbed up through the rankings to win their seventh straight Section 9 girls’ swimming and diving championship on Saturday at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.
“It feels amazing,” DeGeorge said. “I haven’t lost since my seventh-grade year, and to win again my senior year is just great.”
DeGeorge certainly did her part, winning both of the Bushmen’s first place finishes. She won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.86 and then shaved three seconds off her 500-yard freestyle event to win that event with a time of 5:17.32.
“It means a lot,” DeGeorge said. “Last year, I was a section champ in the (200-yard individual medley), but this year to be a two-time section champ feels good.”
She will represent the Bushmen at the New York State Federation girls’ swimming and diving meet on Nov. 22 and 23 at the Webster Aquatic Center in both events. She’s also going to states with the 200-yard medley relay, which finished second with a state qualifying time of 1:51.99.
“Sadie was awesome today,” Pine Bush coach John Barth said. “Sadie and I worked really hard this season to get to that point. She works hard in and out of the pool. She goes to the gym three days a week. She swims six days a week. She is a phenomenal athlete, a great kid and a great swimmer.
The Bushmen were coming up the ranks during most of the meet and finally caught up, tying the New Paltz Huguenots after the 100-yard backstroke when Maya Oakes took fourth and Alanah Giannini took seventh for 26.5 points.
Then Ella Humphrey’s third-place finish and Liana Williams’ seventh-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, along with Lyla Humphrey’s 14th-place finish gave the Bushmen the lead.
“We’ve really worked hard all season,” DeGeorge said. “We cheer for each other all the time. We’re always supporting each other just as a team. As a team, we did it all together.”
Oakes was third in the 200-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. Ella Humphrey was 12th in the 50-yard freestyle. Giannini also was 10th in the 100-yard butterfly. Norah Germano was 10th in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Sophia Gallagher was 12th in the 500-yard freestyle.
“It was great. This was one of the better feelings because we didn’t have – besides Sadie – we didn’t have superstars. Everybody worked together to get the job done.”
The Valley Central Vikings finished fifth with 175 points and Wallkill was 19th with 30 points.
Emmy White had the Vikings best finish when she took third in the 500-yard freestyle. She was also fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. Molly Hoover was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle. Samantha Thompson was 11th in the 100-yard freestyle and 13th in the 50-yard freestyle. Nylah Reynoso was 16th in the 100-yard freestyle.
Wallkill’s Kaitlyn Bonner was 12th in the 100-yard butterfly and 13th in the 100-yard backstroke. Chloe Flipkowski was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly.
Pine Bush’s Paige Gandolfini finished third in the diving event on Friday, with an 11-dive score of 446.10 and Valley Central’s Eleanor O’Neill and Rilee Kinsley were fourth and fifth with respective scores of 405.95 and 396.20. Kaedence Bresnick was ninth with a score of 346.55 and Jillian Kendrick was 10th with a score of 346.55 and Leah Rieber was 16th with a score of 325.20.
