“Though she be but little, she is fierce.”

The Shakespearean quote was emblazoned across the back of the Pine Bush coaches and some of the swimmers at least at the preliminaries, and none of the swimmers were as fierce as junior Mackenzie Gula, winning four total section championships, winning two individual events and anchored two section title relays at Saturday’s Section 9 swimming championships at Valley Central High School.

Pine Bush won another Section 9 championship, finishing the meet with 327 points, well ahead of second-place Washingtonville, which finished with 266.5 points.

Gula won both the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.28 and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.84. She also anchored Pine Bush’s championship 200-yard medley relay team with Alanah Giannini, Ella Humphrey and Ashley Martin to start the meet. She also helped Katie Webster, Samantha McKee and Sadie DeGeorge finish the meet with a championship in the 400-yard freestyle.
Overall, Pine Bush qualified seven swimmers for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships, scheduled for Nov. 18 and 19 at the Webster Aquatic Center in Section 5, while the Valley Central Vikings are sending two: Cali White and Grace Satriano.

Webster finished second in the 50-yard freestyle but qualified for states during Thursday’s preliminary race. She also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle but qualified for states with a 52.92 in the preliminary swim. White finished third.

Wallkill’s Andie Psilopoulos finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:24.34.

Pine Bush’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Webster, Alexandra Vargas, DeGeorge and McKee were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay but were good enough to qualify for the state meet at both the preliminaries and the championship swims.
