Rutty leads Pine Bush girls past VC

Ketura Rutty was all over the floor.

Not only did she score a game-high 20 points, but she rebounded, she blocked inbound passes, she grabbed steals. She did it all in the Bushmen’s 59-37 Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association Division II victory over the Valley Central Vikings on Friday night in Montgomery.

“I work on all sides,” said Rutty, a Pine Bush High School sophomore. “I make sure I get my team the ball and they get me the ball. I try my hardest going to the basket.”

Everything she did worked on Friday night, as she frustrated the Vikings on every end of the floor, especially on the sideline when they weren’t able to push a pass out of her reach.

“You have to pay attention to their eyes and watch the movement involved, and stay patient,” Rutty said. “And then once you get that chance, go up.”

Rutty did a lot of the hard work, but she had plenty of help. Leticia Watson knocked down three 3-point baskets on her way to 18 points.

“Leticia is a game changer because you expect Ketura to have a great game,” Pine Bush coach Michelle Bouffard said. “When Jah-esa (Stokes) comes back (from injury), you expect her to have a game. When Leticia plays well, and all three of them play well together, that’s when we’re pretty strong.”

The Bushmen have been strong all season, posting an 8-6 record and a 3-2 mark in the division. Friday’s win guarantees them at least a .500 record in the division and a spot in the Section 9 Class AA tournament at the end of the month.

Their only two divisional losses have come to the league-leading Warwick Wildcats.

Two days earlier, they posted a 58-23 win over the Middletown Middies, their second win over their neighbors this season. They’ll also get another shot at some of the teams that beat them. They were scheduled to see the Monroe-Woodbury crusaders again on Monday and they’ll see Wallkill again on February 15.

“I love this team,” Rutty said. “They’re so good. I feel we can beat teams like Warwick, but we just need to see our potential. We need to know our talent. In the beginning of the year, we were shaky. I don’t know why, but now we’re starting to come together and realize that we can play better.”

It’s also a young team. Aside from just a few seniors, most of the team is made up of juniors and younger. Rutty and Watson are sophomores. Stokes, who is injured, is a junior.

Most of them have been playing together since elementary school.

“We have a bond and we’re able to pull each other together,” Rutty said. “Sometimes you’ll see us yell at each other, but that’s just to push each other. It doesn’t mean we’re angry.”

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Vikings, who finished the week with a 6-9 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the division. They have an uphill climb for a sectional berth; their only divisional game remaining is against the Wildcats.

Bree Curtis-Wright led the Vikings with nine points, and Shalesse Joyner added eight.

The Vikings defeated the New Paltz Huguenots in a non-league game on Thursday on a night the Vikings honored their seniors.

Giselle Johnson scored a game-high 20 points, and Mia Ponzo added 10.
